Coates Donations |
|||
Abstract: I. Overview Patricia Highsmith’s family on her maternal side, the Coates, donated three sets of letters and documents over the period 1998-2006. These are listed below as the First, Second and Third Coates Donations. Most of the letters and documents originate from Box Canyon Ranch, Weatherford, Texas, home of Highsmith’s first cousin Dan O. Coates, his wife Florine Coates and their sons Dan and Don Coates. It is Don Coates who found, selected and donated the documents in the name of the family. Over the years, Don has also provided invaluable information leading to the identification of family members in Highsmith’s own photograph collection. Dan O. and Florine Coates passed away in 1998, and Dan Coates in 2005. First Coates Donation (see B-01-01-COAD). The first Coates Donation consists of the bulk of the letters from Patricia Highsmith to her first cousin Dan O. (and sometimes Florine) over the period 1966-1994. These were later complemented by other letters from Highsmith to Dan O. (see Second Coates Donation) and also 4 carbon copies of letters to Dan O. which Highsmith had kept in her own files. The total number of letters from Highsmith to Dan O. Coates now stands at 80. The First Coates Donation arrived at the Swiss Literary Archives in early 1998, by way of the Swiss Consul in Los Angeles, California, where Don Coates lives most of the year. Second Coates Donation: The Second Coates Donation consists of additional letters from Patricia Highsmith to Dan O. Coates, letters from Highsmith to other family members (Grandma Coates and her mother Mary), letters between family members, family photographs, newspaper articles on Highsmith and other family members, the marriage certificate of Highsmith’s mother and step-father, Stanley Highsmith, and one typescript of an essay. The photographs were selected by Don Coates and Philippa Burton (for the Archives), in the presence of Florine Coates, at Box Canyon Ranch in June 1998. A full listing of the Second Coates Donation is provided in section II below. / The second Coates donation was deposited at the Swiss Literary Archives in August 1998 by Philippa Burton. Third Coates Donation: The Third Coates Donation consists primarily of a scrapbook of Mary Coates Highsmith, mother of Patricia Highsmith, and various other letters, articles and photographs, including some on the life and art (sculpture) of Dan Coates. The scrapbook documents the professional life of Mary as a graphic artist, and provides the Archives with her first original drawings. / The scrapbook arrived at the Swiss Literary Archives in the Summer of 2006, by way of the Swiss Consul in Los Angeles, California, and the other papers, soon thereafter. II. Full listing of Second Coates Donation In the detailed Archive inventories, these letters and documents are tagged with the mention CoD (Coates Donation), followed by the number from this dossier (i.e.: C-03-c-38 = CoD 38). s.a.
